Ford fiesta review - Engine and transmission |
Engine and transmission
carsinindia.com tested only the turbo diesel, the petrol will be featured here soon. Well the mill under question is a 1.4liter turbocharged, common rail direct injection diesel engine. It's an all new motor, boasting 68ps and 160Nm of torque. Diesels, any diesel for that matter is not about power and acceleration, it's about the torque, to forge ahead from near dead engine speeds. This motor can keep doing that all day, and thanks to it being ultra advanced (by Indian standards at least),
she has great legs too, she can really sprint if required. 3 digit speeds are achieved without breaking a sweat and achieved quite quickly too. The most impressive aspect of this engine though isn't this. It's that flat torque curve which means that power from 2000rpm onwards is seamless, and the way the car pulls is not just effortless, but most extremely linear; below the 1500rpm though is a territory not to be treaded often. The car under test had been a test car for a lot of time perhaps and had seen some abuse in the process I assume. This resulted in a slightly noisy engine when revved.
The transmission is top class and the spring loading also helps in making this transmission, very short shifting with a light clutch that can make life in the city a breeze. The gear ratios may seem a bit too tall, but the diesel has lots of torque, so your speeds will be very high at rather low engine speeds, that mean great efficiency. As we have heard from owners, 16-18kpl in the city and 20kpl on the highway is easily achievable
